Common Signs of Developmental Delays in Children

Common Signs of Developmental Delays in Children
Developmental delays mean that a child is not reaching expected milestones in one or more areas at the pace typically expected for their age. Children develop at different rates, but persistent differences or loss of previously acquired skills deserve attention.
Common signs can include:
Speech & language: Few or no words when expected, difficulty understanding simple instructions, limited communication, or difficulty combining words.
Social interaction: Limited eye contact, little response to name, difficulty engaging with others, or limited interest in shared play.
Motor skills: Difficulty sitting, crawling, walking, running, using a spoon, drawing, or other age-appropriate movements.
Learning & thinking: Difficulty following age-appropriate instructions, solving simple problems, remembering things, or learning new skills.
Behaviour & emotional regulation: Very frequent or intense tantrums, difficulty adapting to changes, or difficulty expressing and regulating emotions.
Play skills: Limited pretend play, difficulty playing appropriately with toys, or difficulty engaging in age-appropriate games.
Daily living skills: Significant difficulty with feeding, dressing, toileting, or other self-care tasks compared with peers.
Regression: Losing a skill that the child had previously acquired is particularly important and should be discussed with a healthcare professional promptly.
What parents should remember
A single missed milestone does not automatically mean a developmental disorder. Development is influenced by many factors, and children can develop unevenly across different areas.
If you notice several concerns, if progress seems unusually slow, or if your child is losing previously acquired skills, consider a developmental assessment rather than waiting for the child to "catch up."
For parent education, a useful approach is:
Observe → Understand → Assess → Support
Early identification can help families understand the child's strengths and needs and access appropriate developmental, educational, behavioural, speech-language, occupational, or psychological support when needed.
